In assessing speaking skill, lecturers usually employ two typical rubrics: holistic rubric and analytic rubric. To find out lecturer's perceptions of holistic and analytic rubrics in assessing speaking, a questionnaire was designed and used to collect data from 40 university lecturers. In addition, nine of the participants were then asked to sit for the in-depth interview in order to obtain more insightful understanding of the type of rubric they prefered and of why and how they used holistic and analytic rubrics in assessing speaking. The results have shown that most of the investigated lecturers had good perceptions of the significance of using rubrics in assessing speaking, of using holistic and analytic rubrics in assessing the student's speaking performance. Besides that, in assessing speaking, the lecturers tended to choose a specific type of rubric based on its benifits, or to combine both holistic and analytic rubrics in assessing speaking skill in order to bring about a high level of reliability.
