Abstract

The development of information technology and the emergence of a number of  new technological innovations create a new retail payment field called e-money. This  development affects the banking industry due to the increasing use of prepaid cards, e-wallets  and money orders, e-banking, e-lending. Virtual communities have been more popular in recent  years due to the advancement of technology and the increasing use of the internet. In some  cases, these communities have created and circulated their own currencies to exchange the  goods and services they offer and thus provide the means of exchange and units of account to  this community. In recent years there has been considerable interest in the development of e money programs. Digital currencies are likely to take over cash as the primary mean of making  low cost payments and make such transactions easier and cheaper for both consumers and  sellers. Digital currencies are records of funds or value available to consumers that are stored on their owned electronic devices, on a prepaid card or on a personal computer via a network  such as the Internet. This article is intended to provide some clear information about digital  currencies, their history, and try to solve the problem of digital currencies in a structured  approach. It's important to note that these currencies are money-like and necessarily come with  their own dedicated retail payment system covered by the term of digital currency scheme.
